πŸ”— Cormac McCarthy’s Archive

Someday I'll get around to actually reading Cormac more. But seeing the giant mess of his house is enough for now.

πŸ”— How to make a website

It's always useful to be reminded of how elemental writing on the web is supposed to me. Keep it simple stupid.

πŸ”— Living entirely for music

Does it take a tuition free school bubble environment to enable living solely for making art music? What if the world deeply valued those committed to the arts instead of silently disdaining them/

πŸ”— The Beths: No Joy

Great sounding new tune from The Beths. Their fun filled pop punk jangle. I saw them live in FW at Tulips. The show was fine, but the songs are fun and a big winner chicken dinner.

πŸ”— β€œIran expands dog-walking ban”

Truth be told, I'm not a fan of walking my own dog. But I'm happy my kids can walk the dog down the block without having to worry about being swept up by secret police. Wait ... can my kids truly not worry about that in today's climate? Probably ... but only due to luck of the draw.

πŸ”— Walt Whitman, selfie connoisseur

"I wonder if – to use today’s parlance – Whitman β€œscrolled” his way into a crisis of self-identity, overwhelmed by the sheer number of photos he possessed and the various, contradictory selves they represented."

My Iowa English prof Ed Folsom makes a brief appearance.

πŸ”— β€œDo Afrikaners want to take Trump up on his South African refugee offer?”

It's easy to draw conclusions about this story, and I've definitely been guilty of it, in my heart, at least. This BBC article laid out details in an evenhanded way and in the words of first hand participants.

πŸ”— Poetry City: Iowa City, IA

A nice piece by an English prof I had for one class. Iowa City truly is a place with literature in the air, if you know how to sniff it out.

πŸ”— TV’s have always been advertising machines

But in today's hyper competetive tech landscape, that fact is being spelled out more loudly and clearly than ever before.

πŸ”— β€œ"The new pro life playbook," Emma Green in The New Yorker

This piece helped me understand disparate strands of why so many conversations feel like they’re being reframed as Family Issues. And why the world feels focused on Birth and Family, especially Large Families. And also why it all feels a bit off-kilter to me.

πŸ”— BBEdit for Writers

An interesting writeup on how BBEdit is still a relevant piece of software for anyone who spends a lot of time stringing words together and battling the blank page.

πŸ”— β€œNew Richard Dawson (just Rich) record review

Just purchased the new Richard Dawson record, and I’m excited to start giving it a listen this week. during downtime at my crossing guard corner. Always exciting to see good review prospects for a record.

πŸ”— β€œThe Sanctuary Pub Closes

My favorite Friday night hangout spot for live jazz and folk music in college. Sad to see the place change so much.
